For healthcare providers
Overview
Behind the Seizure, sponsored by BioMarin, provides no-cost access to the Invitae Epilepsy Panel for eligible pediatric patients in the United States. The 302-gene NGS panel targets developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) and broader epilepsy-related genes, supporting earlier molecular diagnosis and more informed management. Accepted specimens include whole blood, saliva, buccal swab, or gDNA, with results returned in 10 to 21 days. Testing is performed by Invitae (Labcorp), and ordering carries no purchase or prescribing obligation.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which pediatric epilepsy patients are appropriate for the Behind the Seizure sponsored testing program?
Behind the Seizure is designed for children under 10 years of age who experienced unprovoked seizure onset between the ages of 2 and 5. The program targets patients being evaluated for developmental and epileptic encephalopathy or other genetic epilepsy etiologies. Patients must be located in the United States and meet the program's eligibility criteria.
What does the Invitae Epilepsy Panel in the Behind the Seizure program cover?
The Invitae Epilepsy Panel offered through Behind the Seizure analyzes 302 genes associated with epilepsy, including genes implicated in developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. Testing is performed via next-generation sequencing (NGS). Results may clarify molecular etiology and inform targeted treatment planning or clinical trial eligibility.
What specimens and turnaround time apply to the Behind the Seizure epilepsy panel?
Behind the Seizure accepts whole blood, saliva, buccal swab, or extracted gDNA. Turnaround time is 10 to 21 days from specimen receipt. The test is performed by Invitae (Labcorp), and specimen collection kits can be ordered through the program's ordering workflow.
Is there any cost or prescribing obligation when ordering through the Behind the Seizure epilepsy program?
There is no cost to the patient or ordering provider. BioMarin sponsors the program and covers the full cost of the Invitae Epilepsy Panel for eligible patients. Ordering through Behind the Seizure carries no purchase or prescribing obligation of any kind.
Are genetic counseling resources available through the Behind the Seizure program?
Genetic counseling support is available through Invitae (Labcorp) for clinicians and families navigating test results. This can be particularly valuable when results identify actionable variants in DEE-associated genes. Providers can connect with Invitae's genetic counseling team for case-level consultation or to arrange patient-facing counseling.
Which patients are eligible for Behind the Seizure epilepsy genetic testing?
Patients may qualify for Behind the Seizure if they meet the program's eligibility criteria:
- Provider is evaluating a US-based child under age 10
- Child’s first unprovoked seizure occurred between ages 2 and 5 (inclusive)
- Cases outside these criteria may be directed to the Invitae Unlock™ Epilepsy Program
