The Behind the Seizure® program provides no-charge access to Invitae’s comprehensive epilepsy panel for children under 10 with unprovoked seizure onset between ages 2–5. The panel evaluates 300+ epilepsy-related genes that can influence management decisions. Early genetic insights may support faster diagnosis, targeted treatment planning, and improved care coordination.

Patient selection
- Provider is evaluating a US-based child under age 10
- Child’s first unprovoked seizure occurred between ages 2 and 5 (inclusive)
- Cases outside these criteria may be directed to the Invitae Unlock™ Epilepsy Program

How to use this program

Order Test
Discuss testing with the family, confirm eligibility, and submit the order through Invitae’s online portal.

Collect Sample
Collect the patient’s specimen using an Invitae kit and return it using the prepaid shipping label. Most samples ship at no charge within the US.

Access results through your Invitae provider portal and use available resources to guide post-test discussions with the patient’s family.

What is the Behind the Seizure® program?
A no-charge program providing access to Invitae’s comprehensive epilepsy panel for eligible children under 10 with first unprovoked seizure onset between ages 2 and 5. The panel includes genes that may inform treatment planning and family counseling.
Who is eligible?
Patients in the US under age 10 with an initial unprovoked seizure occurring between ages 2 and 5. Patients outside this range may be eligible for the Invitae Unlock™ Epilepsy Program.
Which test is used?
The program uses Invitae’s comprehensive epilepsy panel, which analyzes more than 300 genes associated with early-onset epilepsy and developmental epileptic encephalopathies (DEE).
Are providers or families billed?
No. Testing is fully sponsored. Providers, patients, and insurers are not billed.
How is a sample collected?
Order the test through the Invitae portal. Collect saliva, buccal, or blood using an Invitae kit, and return it with the prepaid shipping label.
How are results delivered?
Results are posted to the provider portal, typically within 10–21 days after receipt of both the specimen and requisition.
Is genetic counseling included?
Yes. Post-test genetic counseling is provided at no cost for all patients tested through the program. Families can schedule a session through their patient portal or by calling 1-800-436-3037.
